The amazing adventures of STICK DARING

For the last 2 years, Neil Peters (aka Stick Daring) has talked about attempting to sail around Britain in a Laser dinghy. His friends and family naturally assumed this was harmless pub banter, and that Neil (or ‘Stick’ as we shall now call him) would never actually get off his backside and do this. After all, this is a man who comes up with several hundred new business ideas on an average day.

Against all expectation, last Tuesday Stick got into his Laser dinghy at Eastbourne and started sailing east, in an apparent attempt to circumnavigate the island of Great Britain anti-clockwise. To those with any seafaring knowledge, this is widely regarded as the wrong way to try to sail around Britain, if you’re mad enough to try it in the first place.

A circumnavigation of Britain in Laser has only been done once previously, in 2003 by a man called Ron Pattendon, who many consider to be clinically insane. And even he was smart enough to go around the right way, taking a year and a half to complete the adventure.

Stick has encountered rough seas and poor weather since leaving Eastbourne but has been helped enormously by a combination of helpful fisherman, random strangers and welcoming sailing clubs. Today he crossed the Thames Estuary and is currently located somewhere off Brightlingsea in Essex, heading into the North Sea.

If you know Stick, or happen to live near the British Coast, please keep an eye out for him in his modified orange Laser and perhaps even offer him some shelter or refreshment for the night. In exchange, he will regale you with stories of his adventures (some of which will likely be made up) but I promise you, the entertainment will be worth it.

You can follow Stick’s progress at his Facebook page and also track his current progress via spotter.

Failing that, Stick is raising money for Prostate Cancer in honour of his friend Jeff. You can offer your support by donating at his Just Giving page, below.

The 2019 Masters Rolling Thunder series ladder has been updated following the Torbay Nationals which is also the cut-off for qualification to the 2020 Master Worlds in Geelong, Australia. In line with the Rolling Thunder rules posted ahead of the first event, priority for entry and charter boats will be based on the respective ladders. Please sign the petition to keep the Laser Standard and Laser Radial the Olympic boat for Paris 2024

This petition is not about our members. Only 2 (1 Standard and 1 Radial sailor) ever get to go to each Olympic games. This petition is for the good of the sport of sailing.

Lasers may be found in nearly every country in the World. Those small countries which have Lasers in every club and whose young sailors can have the Olympic dream.

The less financially well off MNAs simply cannot afford to completely replace all their equipment and what will happen to all the Lasers they already have? 1 boat for club sailors, 1 boat for the Olympic sailors??

If some countries can afford to immediately update all their equipment and others cannot sailing once more becomes more elitist.

What is the benefit of replacing the Laser with a class which is very slightly faster when everyone is racing one designs anyway, so it is all about the sailor. For sure a small percentage of speed will not translate to a huge increase in viewing figures.

So for the good of the sport, from grass roots to aspiring Olympians in the Worlds smallest sailing countries, please join the 6000+ sailors who support the petition..

Another fantastic weekend at Pevensey Bay, please let us know your thoughts

it only takes 3 minutes!

Training boats

Laser Performance has introduced the Laser 'Club Edition', described as a training boat which does not bear the World Sailing Building Plaque or a Sail Button. This is fine as a training boat but we feel it is important to clarify that these boats are not Class legal based on the Fundamental Rule within the Laser Class Rules. These boats will be ineligible to compete in any UKLA sanctioned events, broadly speaking but not exclusively, those advertised on the UKLA website. Whilst the UKLA would like all Laser racing to be conducted strictly in accordance with the Class Rules, it does not consider it should dictate to sailing clubs throughout the UK over their adoption, though they would be subject to protest by competing sailors in the same way that any non-compliant gear currently is.

Please note, the UKLA is not party to the discussions between ILCA and LPE, does not possess any privileged information and considers itself a neutral party. This advisory statement is solely to ensure sailors wishing to compete in UKLA events understand the Laser 'Club Edition' is marketed as a training boat and not as a racing boat.
