First Time Visitors to the UK Laser Website

Latest News Items

Following a review of the weather forecasts this morning and from a telephone conversation with WPNSA & the RYA, we have agreed that, on balance and given the long travelling distances of some of our competitors, it would be prudent to cancel the Qualifier at WPNSA.

It leaves me only to thank all those who will have put in so much effort in order to hold the event and hope that they don’t feel that their time has been wasted. UKLA have experienced great events WPNSA & we will be visiting again in October

The UKLA is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of 20-year-old Olivia Burt. As a popular and committed Laser Radial sailor, Olivia exhibited all the drive, determination and good sportsmanship required to progress as a successful senior competitor.
> Olivia’s passion for sailing always shone through and all those who knew her in the sailing community will miss her tremendously; she was both a likeable and fair competitor. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Olivia’s family and friends at this very sad time.

British successes in Miami (Gold and Bronze)
Alison Young went into the medal race at the top of the Laser Radial rankings on the back of four wins in eight fleet races as the breeze built.

A second place in the medal race handed the Rio 2016 athlete, who recently teamed up with coach and Olympian Penny Clark, the gold medal.

Nick Thompson went into the medal race with a battle on his hands to keep his second place position.

On the first leg Thompson was handed a penalty for infringing New Zealander Thomas Saunders, sending him to the back of the fleet. He clawed back to third place but German rival Philipp Buhl's second denied Thompson the silver and forced him to settle instead for bronze.

Chris Fyans
It’s with huge sadness and shock that we are announcing that Chris Fyans died suddenly yesterday, December 14th.

Chris was a hugely popular member of our fleet, competing at almost every UK Masters event in recent memory, and a regular part of team UK at Masters Worlds and Europeans.

Most of the fleet would count Chris as a friend, and it’s a massive loss to our community. He was a fantastic, committed sailor on the water, and always superb company off the water. He was on the water with us just 3 weeks ago at the Masters season finale at QM, where he finished first Great Grand Master.

He has a great many friends across the Masters fleet and at Weir Wood SC, who will be hugely saddened at his passing.

Most of all he knew how to live life to the full, and spent as much time as possible racing his Laser.

Our thoughts go out to his wife Valerie and his family.
